DUTIES OF ART TO BE AUTONOMOUS, CRITICAL, AND FREE
Third MESS Forum held in Art house Kriterion
The third MESS Forum about the subject “Arts in the service of awareness of individual and collective responsibility” was held today in Art house Kriterion. Its participants Abigail Browde and Michael Silverstone as authors of play “The Fever”, and Prof. Dr. Sulejman Bosto from the Faculty of Philosophy, and Croatian director Ivan Plazibat, through the moderation from Dino Mustafić – unfolded many questions about the position of theater and theatrical artists in society today. When speaking about their own play, Abigail Browde and Michael Silverstone said that interactive theater presumes acquainting with new experiences. “Our play cannot be done without an audience. Each performance is a completely new story, because we don’t know how people will react. In the aspect of responsibility we can say that we are exploring human emotion and reaction through this performance, and we truly believe that it can create greater empathy with people in the outside world”, noted by Browde and Silverstone. “I believe that theater must work in the sense of the physical, and not only the emotional, and as engaged socially. That is why it’s a good thing that The Fever is a piece overlooking the ordinary conventions in theater and that it offers something new to the audience”, stated by director Ivan Plazibat. While noting that theater and the arts are modules of freedom, Prof. Dr. Sulejman Bosto said that theater must never be dogmatic. “Art is obligated to stay autonomous, and pose as a critical conscience stemming from freedom”, said Bosto. The fourth and last MESS Forum will be held on Saturday, October 6th in Art house Kriterion at 3 PM, and speaking on the subject “Arts in the deconstruction of Balkan myths, nationalism and patriotism”, are director of play “Cezary Goes to War” Cezary Tomaszewski, the author of performance “Bordel Balkan” Jeton Neziraj, professor at the Faculty of Political Science UNSA Nerzuk Ćurak, and dramaturge Stela Mišković, while the discussion will be moderated by Dino Mustafić.
