STYLES OF RADICAL WILL / Susan Sontag

“Styles of Radical Will” is a collection of essays by Susan Sontag published in 1969. Inthe sense of form, languageand idea this book is a continuation of her essay matter that already began inher first book of essays “Against Interpretation” in 1966. The discourse of her essays is defined as fragmented (deconstruction before Derrida?), personal, theoretically subversive, crazed and performative, formally distinct and literally expressive, but also (as needed) theoretically impersonal and scientific. Although, her approach to works of art essentially differs from that of Derrida. While Derrida’s method, a search for that which is beyond, presents a complication of deconstruction and leads to absurdity, Sontag on the other hand pleads for racketeering the own, primordial, primary artistic experience and sense. In America, but also in the world public “Styles of Radical Will” is welcomed as culturally, linguistically, and in sense of content original and innovative material.

“Styles of Radical Will” is composed from essays, differing in theme, seemingly incompatible – critically-philosophical and literary-subjective, theoretically neutral and politically engaged. Therein, thegeneral critique recognized a modernist discourse; Marxist, a deflection of language and idea similar to that of the American “new criticism”, psychoanalysis etc. Susan Sontag was declared a true American modernist. The book was met with much the same, and maybe even a greater enthusiasm, some now even recognizing a “postmodernist” discourse in those essays, leading up to the declaration of Sontag as the “American mother of modernism/postmodernism”.
