In the context of theater, when we refer to “the system” we usually mean the social and political order in which we live. However, the project Back speaks of a different kind of engine—one whose grindstone mills our everyday lives.

The “system” we refer to has, for decades, outlived all other systems, both named and unnamed. In a different universe, we might call Back a dystopian portrait of the world we live in; sadly, that is not the case. We cannot turn a blind eye to the fact that organized crime has penetrated every pore of our society, that it destroys families, and that we have all – whether consciously or subconsciously – become cogs in that mechanism.

The ways a person is drawn into such a system are diverse; its victims are all of us – individuals, members of smaller communities, and ultimately society as a whole. This is precisely what the play examines. We do not ask questions of salvation, nor do we offer answers; we simply present a terrifying image of the modern age.

Only when we recognize and accept that image will we be ready to ask questions and seek answers. Until we have the strength to swallow the “red pill,” nothing remains for us but to live inside this matrix.
