Based on a play by Andrei Tarkovsky
Produced by Bülent Özdil, the project reinterprets Tarkovsky’s cultural legacy through a fusion of theatre, performance, and visual arts, in collaboration with the German State Theatre in Timisoara.
The story follows Alexei, a dying man who recalls his childhood, youth, parents, first love, and his turbulent marriage to Natalia. Its associative narration abandons linear storytelling, moving freely across different time periods. One narrative strand focuses on Alexei’s adult life and his mother Maria, while the other portrays his childhood in the 1930s and Maria’s hardships.
Blending personal memories, collective history, and dreams, Mirror also reflects contemporary issues—Russian identity, censorship, freedom of speech, and tensions with Ukraine. The play explores themes of identity, memory, and human complexity, while employing artificial intelligence to depict both idealized and distorted memories, expanding the work’s visual and sonic dimensions.
