Inspired by the novel by Vidmantė Jasukaitytė Mary of Egypt
What would the story of Mary of Egypt, a woman from the 4th century, look like if she were to wander through today’s urban “desert” in search of redemption? Do we truly live in a less violent and more “civilised” world? Have we become more empathetic, more tolerant? And when we speak of human rights, of women’s freedom and position in society – have we really broken free from the ancient patriarchal legacy?
The story of Mary of Egypt, shrouded in voices and mysticism, is the point of departure for this production. Forced to sell her body in 4th-century Alexandria, she joined pilgrims on their way to Jerusalem, only to find the doors of the Holy Sepulchre closed to her. She then wandered the desert for years, seeking repentance and peace.
“Mary of Egypt is a woman who never gives up. She moves on, even after surviving the most brutal violence. I feel her deeply – I see myself in her story. This is not just a role: here my soul falls into the abyss and creates a new life. The play helps me stand up again – may it help others too,” says actress Eglė Jackaitė.
For the authors, Mary of Egypt today reflects every woman – a mother, daughter, sister, or wife – who must walk each day along the fragile line between saint and sinner.
