The play Death on Photo by Tvrtko Kulenović is based on Robert Capa’s famous and controversial photograph The Falling Soldier, taken in 1936 during the Spanish Civil War, which depicts a Republican soldier at the moment he is fatally wounded. The play explores the story and mystery behind the photograph – the long-standing controversy over whether the scene is authentic or staged, who the soldier in the photograph actually was, and how he really died. Through this case, Kulenović raises broader questions about the boundary between truth and manipulation in photography and documentary accounts of war, and about what a single image can – and cannot – testify about a person’s death. The radio drama was named the best drama of the year by Radio Sarajevo and Radio Ohrid in 1989, and its material later served as the basis for Kulenović’s novel Čovjekova porodica (The Human Family).
